Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve is a single unit with Monument and Preserve in its designation but is counted as a National Monument. Denali National Preserve is a separate unit that is managed with Denali National Park. Valles Caldera National Preserve is a free-standing unit in New Mexico. These could include hunting, fishing, mining, and/or oil/gas exploration. Preserves are intended to protect a certain resource in the area while allowing for other limited resource extraction activities. Other units have preserve in the name but are counted as another unit type. Some are managed in conjunction with another unit but still counted as a separate unit. National Preserves are an interesting bunch. ![]() Ideally, these units are the crème de la crème. A few parks don’t fit this mold such as Gateway Arch National Park and this is due to that political brownie points. Almost all of the National Parks protect an amazing ecosystem and natural feature from the reefs for Dry Tortugas National Park to the deserts of Saguaro National Park to the Tundra of Gates of the Arctic National Park. These areas designed to protect large areas of land and keep the area wild. The national park designation has the strictest protection and the most restrictions for use. National Parks are generally a large area of wilderness that is unique and breathtaking. I generally divide the terms up into four main sections: Natural Parks, Historical Parks, Water Parks and Everything Else. This is a breakdown of National Park nomenclature as to what they would mean in an ideal world. Additionally, how the park is created plays a role in the park’s designation. But we don’t live in an ideal world and politics wins over logic and consistency. In an ideal world where politicians aren’t looking to score positive brownie points, the NPS system would have a set of standard definitions for designations, and all the designations would match the unit. National Wild and Scenic Rivers and Riverways ![]() According to National Park Service, the agency hold each of the 424 units in equal standing and fund each park according to their individual needs regardless of their designation. Units are found in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia, and the territories of Guam, American Samoa, U.S. There are 14 different designations in the National Park System.
